In industrial production, the conductivity and material quality of metals like stainless steel are critical to safety management. Several major accidents in China during 2022 provided harsh lessons.

Frequent Electrical Shock Accidents in Factories : In 2022 alone, publicly available accident investigation reports from local emergency management authorities documented multiple incidents where workers died from electric shock due to equipment leakage  combined with a failed protective grounding system .

Shenzhen Jiasulong "June 29" Incident : A worker was electrocuted while dismantling old cables when the metal ladder he was standing on became electrified. The investigation revealed severe code violations in the electrical circuit,  lacking necessary leakage protection and grounding measures .

Ningbo Fenghua Zenggong "July 10" Incident : The accident investigation report clearly indicated that the direct cause was a leakage from a dehydrator, combined with a  disconnected protective grounding conductor  on its casing, which failed to provide protection, leading to the operator's electrocution.

Shanghai Weixun "September 1" Incident : An employee was electrocuted while illegally repairing a circuit in the mezzanine of an office building, once again highlighting the  significant risks of unauthorized electrical work .

Metallurgical Furnace Explosion Due to Substandard Materials : A company in Chaoyang, Liaoning province, purchased a pressure ring made of  304 stainless steel misrepresented as a corrosion-resistant alloy . This non-compliant material underwent intergranular corrosion during use, ultimately causing a furnace explosion that resulted in  2 deaths and 1 injury , with direct economic losses exceeding 3.4 million RMB. The court ultimately sentenced the head of the involved company to 3 years in prison for producing and selling counterfeit products.

Production Safety Accident at a Large Steel Mill : A production safety accident also occurred at the Baosteel Desheng Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. ironmaking plant, where a 23-year-old worker was struck by a slag stopper plate at the taphole and died despite medical treatment.

Metal Corrosion Case at a Gas Transmission Station : A case of galvanic corrosion occurred at an offshore gas transmission station. The report suggested that direct contact between ordinary carbon steel components and stainless steel components, which have different electrical potentials, led to electrochemical corrosion under specific environmental conditions. This case serves as a warning for engineering design and maintenance on  how to properly use different metallic materials .

Household Safety Hazards (Home & Public Environments)

Beyond industry, accidents involving conductive metals like stainless steel in homes and public places also sounded alarms for household safety.

Girl Inserts Chopsticks into Socket, Loses 9 Fingers : In November 2022, a young girl in Chongqing was playing at home when she inserted a pair of  stainless steel chopsticks  into the holes of an electrical socket, resulting in a severe electric shock. Due to serious electrical burns on her hands,  9 fingers had to be amputated , leaving only her right thumb. The tragedy left an indelible scar on the family and the child's life.

Electric Shock in a Public Place : At the end of 2022, a parent took their 12-year-old son to a hot pot restaurant. During the meal, the boy inserted  metal cutlery  from the table into a nearby socket and was electrocuted, collapsing to the floor. This incident sparked online discussions about safety protection in public places and parental supervision responsibilities.

Regulatory and Technical Standard Updates

In 2022, technical standards in relevant fields were also updated and emphasized to prevent similar accidents at the source:

New National Standard Emphasizes Corrosion Resistance : The "General Code for Building Electrical and Intelligent" (GB 55024-2022), effective October 1, 2022, clearly stipulates that when using a building's foundation as a grounding device, external conductors buried in soil shall be made of  copper or stainless steel materials , and hot-dip galvanized steel shall not be used. This is to prevent galvanic corrosion caused by contact between different metals, which could affect grounding effectiveness.

Market Supervision and Defect Recalls :

In 2022, the Shandong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation inspected industrial and commercial electric food processing equipment and found that  4 batches of products did not meet relevant standard requirements .

In 2023, the Guangdong Provincial Administration for Market Regulation issued a recall announcement. A company in Chaozhou City recalled certain batches of electric kettles because their  grounding measures did not meet safety standards .

In 2024, some batches of Xinniu brand multi-functional electric hot pots were also recalled due to  grounding measures failing to meet standards .
